(82) Production Notes

Last week I took the week off work so I could stay home and put 40 hours into finally finishing the re-edit and polishing of earlier chapters. At last it is done! Chapters 1-9 have been redone in their entirety. Chapters 10-20 have been gone over with sandpaper and a noise filter. And every single chapter has had large sections of my poor voice work removed and replaced with valiant voice volunteers, giving a distinctive sound to many characters. Never again will anyone have to suffer through my McGonagall or Weasley Twins. Chapter 50’s Padma is now done by Amanda Grassello. In fact, over a dozen voices from early episodes have been upgraded, also including:
Ernie Macmillan
Anthony Goldstein
Auror Komodo
The Carrow Twins
Madam Hooch
Morag MacDougal
Gregory Goyle
Pansy Parkinson
Lucius Malfoy
Neville Longbottom

And of course there are still some roles available, see here if you’re interested.

*(I realize a couple lines are off… I hadn’t gotten them recorded, and for completeness I substituted a place-holder that means something very similar. These will be replaced with the correct wording in a couple weeks)

  1. Outstanding! Thank you so very much for your continuing effort!

  2. Amazing voice acting with Harry this chapter. I almost teared up in the middle of my school’s dining hall.

So what chapters should we redownload now, and what chapters should we wait a bit longer for before we download again? Is the placeholder dialogue just in chapters 10-20 right now? Thanks, and keep up the good work.

    • There are two very short place-holder lines, and they should be pretty much seamless, so they won’t be noticeable unless you’re reading along with the text copy (one in chap 46, one in 50). Feel free to redownload now if you wish. The chapters that have been altered in some way are 1-29a, 30-31, 33-34, 35b, 41-46, 50, 63a, 65, 67, 69, 71, 72b, 74b, 78a, 78c, 79b. Many of the later chapters simply had one or two minor character’s lines replaced with a volunteer’s voice (Pansy, Anthony, etc).

      • Ambivalent Wanderer

Just recently, I finally got around to doing that redownloading I spoke of, and in regards to chapters 50 and 63a, I found that they still do not have Padma’s current voice actress. I got up to 50 before it occurred to me to actually check if they were updated. Now I’m not sure what to do. Am I possibly downloading from the wrong place?

        • Oh sweet monkeys! I never uploaded those updated episodes! They’re replaced now, wish someone had mentioned it earlier. Thank you!

    Wow!

That’s some serious dedication. If there’s anything I can do to help make your life a little easier (donations perhaps?), just let me know.

    • No, no donations. The hope is to increase understanding and application of rationality, so the general raising of sanity is it’s own reward. Plus I don’t think that would be legal anyway. :) Really the best help is just to share this and tell other people about it – either the written fic or the podcast, whichever they’re more likely to consume. And thank you!

  5. OK, I’m going to be a bit blunt here, but I dislike the “Indian” accent of Amanda. Let’s be rational…

Elizer says they were foreign-born and their parents moved to Britain just to attend Hogwarts. While I don’t know what his canon is, I presume they would have moved when they were younger, as Hogwarts is only open to British residents – otherwise about 99% of the students would be foreign. Unless of course there is a racial predisposition to the magical gene…

Even if they only just arrived, after 6 months in a school of 11 year olds, everyone’s accents will have become like everyone else’s (though the rest of you obviously speak like North Americans – which is a bit jarring to me being from England, but I guess most listeners are in North America so don’t notice/care).

Rowling obviously didn’t think things through rationally at all, and probably just wanted to include token foreigners representative of the current UK population, without considering why they would be in magical Britain. In a magical world which separates itself from muggles, there would not have been a rush of migration to western countries. There might be the odd tourist who likes it so much that he stays. Rowling’s Patils are not muggle-borns, which would be the other explanation for why they are in Britain.

That said, I’m not entirely sure whether the Salem Witches Institute should exist. Why would magical Europeans have moved to America, and would they have wiped out magical Native Americans? Would muggle-borns from American colonists have been abducted and raised by magical Native Americans or what?

Rowing didn’t think too much about Cho either, which is a Japanese and not Chinese name – which in the Chinese translation had to be rendered as “qiu” (in Pinyin), pronounced like “tsyo” – which, coincidentally with McGonagall’s actor, means Autumn (i.e. fall)
