1. Harry must succeed via his own efforts. The cavalry is not coming.
\nEveryone who might want to help Harry thinks he is at a Quidditch game.<\/p>\n

2. Harry may only use capabilities the story has already shown him to have;
\nhe cannot develop wordless wandless Legilimency in the next 60 seconds.<\/p>\n

3. Voldemort is evil and cannot be persuaded to be good;
\nthe Dark Lord\u2019s utility function cannot be changed by talking to him.<\/p>\n

4. If Harry raises his wand or speaks in anything except Parseltongue,
\nthe Death Eaters will fire on him immediately.<\/p>\n

5. If the simplest timeline is otherwise one where Harry dies \u2013
\nif Harry cannot reach his Time-Turner without Time-Turned help \u2013
\nthen the Time-Turner will not come into play.<\/p>\n

6. It is impossible to tell lies in Parseltongue.<\/p>\n

Within these constraints,
\nHarry is allowed to attain his full potential as a rationalist,
\nnow in this moment or never,
\nregardless of his previous flaws.<\/p>\n

Of course \u2018the rational solution\u2019,
\nif you are using the word \u2018rational\u2019 correctly,
\nis just a needlessly fancy way of saying \u2018the best solution\u2019
\nor \u2018the solution I like\u2019 or \u2018the solution I think we should use\u2019,
\nand you should usually say one of the latter instead.
\n(We only need the word \u2018rational\u2019 to talk about ways of thinking,
\nconsidered apart from any particular solutions.)<\/p>\n

And by Vinge\u2019s Principle,
\nif you know exactly what a smart mind would do,
\nyou must be at least that smart yourself.
\nAsking someone \u201cWhat would an optimal player think is the best move?\u201d
\nshould produce answers no better than \u201cWhat do you think is best?\u201d<\/p>\n

So what I mean in practice,
\nwhen I say Harry is allowed to attain his full potential as a rationalist,
\nis that Harry is allowed to solve this problem
\nthe way YOU would solve it.
\nIf you can tell me exactly how to do something,
\nHarry is allowed to think of it.<\/p>\n

But it does not serve as a solution to say, for example,
\n\u201cHarry should persuade Voldemort to let him out of the box\u201d
\nif you can\u2019t yourself figure out how.<\/p>\n

The thing about greatly reducing the pitch of a voice to anonymize the speaker is that if you do it to a whole bunch of people, they all sound very similar and it\u2019s hard to tell them apart. For purposes of anonymity, I suppose this is a feature. But for the purpose of a podcast, it\u2019s a bug. You want the voices to be distorted, but still discernible as different people. So I used a number of different distortion methods to alter the Death Eater voices, but still leave them distinct. I\u2019m going to claim that Voldemort\u2019s observation of\u00a0Mr. Honor\u2019s quickly transfigured armor and jury-rigged Voice Distortion Charm applied to the majority of the Death Eaters, so they all had their own unique distortion charm rather than a uniform one.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going back to every-other-week for the remainder of the podcast. If my calculations are correct, and there are no major complications, the final episode will air the last week of December. Which is a hell of way to set myself up for a Planning Fallacy fail. But you gotta have goals!<\/p>\n
