We Want MoR – Chapter 6

WWMoR-Square

Join Steven and Brian as we dive into the world of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality! Steven will play the role of the tour guide while doing his best to not spoil any of the surprises and Brian will play the seasoned adventurer who is new to this particular work.

In this episode, we cover chapter 6! Harry and Professor McGonagall have an intense moment when Harry perceives his family is at risk, showing a side of Harry that we haven’t seen before and it’s a little… scary.

Original chapters, written by Eliezer Yudkowsky, can be read here and the audiobook chapters, recorded by Eneasz Brodski, can be found earlier in this podcast feed and on the website.

In next week’s episode, we will be covering chapter 7.

  1. In regards to the expanded Trunks: In The Goblet of Fire, Mad Eye Moody’s Trunk was said to have multiple compartments, the 7th being big enough to hold the Real Alastor Moody captive all year.

Also in the Fantastic Beasts and where to find them , Newt’s Trunk is large enough inside to house basically a small ecosystem, ~200 weird pets.

It’s interesting hearing Brian’s thought of the story especially with having an 11 year old child himself. I never really attributed Harry’s behaviors as being clearly in the wrong before.

It is amusing how Steven is almost tip toeing around what certain events foreshadow, trying not to give anything away. Or when Brian thinks he’s caught Steven in a oh I don’t want to comment on that so it must be important. Dun Dun Dun

  2. It is also worth noting that the walking trunk that follows you around is a reference the ‘The luggage’ a ‘Sapient Pairwood’ trunk In Terry Pratchett’s Diskworld.

  3. Again I read the story with my two younger siblings as a teenager.

But the bit where Harry is very concerned about McGonagall calling the English equivalent of CPS, was totally reasonable to my siblings and I because we had some cousins that were taken away from the care of my grandmother based on a seemingly random accusation from an outsider.
And as an adult these cousins have come back into my life and they agree with me that yeah they would have been perfectly fine in the care of our grandmother.
