I think possibly the one situation you can “split” the party would be in something like a heist scene, like rescuing the Princess in Star Wars where R2D2 stays behind. For one, the characters are still connected by communicator, so they can still generate social interactions, but also R2D2 can do skill checks that affect the party- I guarantee you nobody was checking their phones while R2 was failing his Electronics rolls to shut down the garbage compactor!
